AC Leaking Water Indoors?
Water on the floor, a wet AC closet or dripping from the ceiling needs attention. Switch cooling off, keep clear of wet electrical equipment and arrange service to find the source.

What to do right now
- Turn cooling OFF at the thermostat if it is safe to reach.
- Keep away from wet outlets, wiring and equipment. Do not touch electrical controls while standing in water.
- Move belongings away from the wet area if safe. Stay clear of a sagging or bulging ceiling.
- Photograph the leak and affected materials from a safe position, and request service.
Do not bypass a float switch, keep restarting a system that shuts itself off, or pour chemicals into an unidentified pipe. Avoid opening equipment panels or climbing into an attic to investigate.
Normal drainage versus an indoor leak
Cooling removes moisture from indoor air. That condensate should drain through the system’s intended drainage arrangement. Water dripping from a designated outdoor drain outlet can be normal; water escaping into the closet, ceiling or room needs investigation.
What can cause an indoor AC leak?
Drainage blockage
A restricted condensate line can cause water to back up. A fitted safety switch may shut the system off when water rises.
Drain pan or connection issue
A damaged pan, leaking connection or condensate-pump problem may allow water to escape. The drainage arrangement needs inspection.
A frozen coil thawing
Melting ice can cause water around the indoor unit. Ice needs its own diagnosis; clearing a drain alone may not address it.
What about a leaking mini-split?
A wall-mounted unit also needs its condensate to drain correctly. Report where the water appears and whether the unit has weak airflow or visible ice. Do not remove the cover or try to reposition the unit yourself.
Check the surrounding materials too
Stopping the equipment leak and drying wet building materials are separate tasks. If cabinets, baseboards, drywall or flooring became wet, ask about a moisture assessment. A dry-looking surface does not establish the condition inside the material.

Request help with an AC water leak
Send your city or ZIP code, where water appears, when it started, whether the system shut off and photos of the equipment and wet area. Do not restart cooling just to make a video.
Common questions
Can I keep running the AC?
Switch cooling off when it is leaking indoors and arrange a diagnosis. Continued operation may worsen water or equipment damage.
Does a water leak mean the system needs replacing?
Not necessarily. The source and equipment condition must be assessed before comparing repair and replacement options.
How much is a drain repair?
The price depends on the blockage or fault, access and any damaged parts. Photos help us prepare; inspection may be needed before quoting.
